Teach Your Kids to Be Active

child exercises

In a world of computers, cell phones, Sidekicks, X boxes and video gaming, kids today have an entirely new concept of what having fun is. These are the babies of the new technology, and while knowing how to operate all these gadgets can be good for them in many ways, this new way of playing can also lead to a lifestyle of physical inactivity for them.

Back in the day, we played in our backyards, on playgrounds, in the middle of dead end streets, making up all kinds of games where you had to run, jump, climb, throw balls, and just plain move that body all around. Flash forward to the present, and with the exception of children who participate in organized sports, you'll find that many of our youths spend day after day parked in front of a TV or computer monitor, or sitting around text messaging their buddies. This is something that you as a parent, relative, mentor or adult influence can, if not change, at least put a dent in. It's up to us to show the kids of today how to really play.

First of all, it helps if you're pretty active, yourself. You can't just talk the talk, here. You have to walk the walk. Kids do what they see YOU do.

When your children see that you actively participate in and enjoy outdoors activities, they'll want to do the same. It's a blueprint that you're setting for them that they will touch back on later in life. Be it biking, going swimming, or just playing catch with them, seeing you active and enjoying sports and physical activities will rub off on them in a very big way.

Remember that children tend to pick up your good habits, as well as your bad ones. It has been proven that children with parents who smoke are more likely to become smokers later on. It's the same for everything else they see you do. Or not do. They are learning from you what to do, and how to be. So, by the same token, your good habits will set an example for them, as well. If they see you just sitting around on the couch all day just lounging around when you're not at work, and never being active, then that's setting the tone for the type of adults they're more likely to become. Sedentary and inactive. Try to avoid that by getting outside and doing physical activities, both with and without your kids.

Good influences start early. Be sure that you're setting a good, healthy, active example for your child. It can only lead to a better, healthier, happier future for them.

The Web Diva

Going into my 3rd year blogging and publishing sites on the web, I'm finding myself to be ridiculously busy these days. I never knew that this would become such an addiction!! I now run 5 blogs (6, if you count the one I pretty much abandoned in January), and have built about 10 non blog websites. I'm a domain name junkie, and if I told you how many I own, you'd think I'd lost my mind. The thing is, it's hard to keep up with it all, but I still keep publishing webs! I think I have a problem...... ;)

So, having been a Blogspot blogger from the start, what the hell made me go and start up a Wordpress blog? OMG. So NOT Blogspot!! A whole new set of skills to learn here, and at this point, I'm muddling through it. But at the end, it's going to be worth it. I got a great idea to start a blog about another one of my favorite hobbies, and a beautiful, kick ass Wordpress theme to put it all on. I can't wait until it's ready! I'm not giving details on what the blog's about until it's up. I'm paranoid about people stealing my ideas. Hell, I've already had people come on here and steal my content, but such is life on the web, right? But I will post about it here when it's done.

But man, let me just say, my brain has been sweating the past couple days, learning how to get everything arranged on a new format. One thing I love about Blogspot blogs is that you pick a name, sign in, and a few clicks and some drag and drops later, you have a blog! You don't have to know anything about a database or php, whatever. But this will be good for me. I want to be able to publish on any format, anytime, anywhere. I don't like being limited! ;)

I think that I'm a web addict because I love writing. I'm ADDICTED to writing. Now, on my latest blog, The Trainer's Corner, I'm playing around with some of my fiction writing skills. That's going to challenge me in a new way, because I can write informative posts and articles with my eyes closed, like nothing. But, I want to get something else going.... to spice things up a bit, and also, just to give me another reason to write!

I need to hit Lotto soon.... lol. I could sit on the comp all day just writing and updating sites. So far, that ain't paying the bills, though! ;)

Are any of you as addicted to blogging and web publishing? I said before that someone needs to start a 12 step program for us. "Step AWAY from the computer..... Okay, get dressed, and go outside....NOW!" lol!

And Now for Some Meditation.....

 border=
With all that we have to deal with in daily life, a little meditation now and then can reap tremendous benefits. Not only does it help to relieve stress, but it can also help you to heal your body, and can also help you focus on achieving certain goals.

There are many forms of meditation that you can utilize. There's no one particular way to do it. Just choose the method that works best for you.

The one that most people are familiar with is the seated meditation, where you sit with legs crossed and eyes closed, slowly trying to relax and quiet the body and mind. That's the one I use when I'm trying to get some focus.

Other forms include chanting meditation, breath meditation,
walking meditation, and visual meditation, among others.

Since I'm no expert on any of them, I'm going to recommend a couple great websites where you can learn much more on the subject:

Meditation Station
Mastery of Meditation, Yoga & Zen

As part of keeping a healthy body and mind, meditation is definitely something to add to your health and fitness arsenal!

Cool Body Facts #1

COOL BODY FACTS

I feel that it's imperative to know as much as you can about your body. After all, you only get one, right? So, you really should know as much as possible about this valuable piece of real estate! That way, you can take the very best care of it. Here are some fun body facts to know, starting up top, with the brain.

Betcha didn't know that.......

You cannot tickle yourself. The cerebellum of the brain warns the rest of the brain that you are about to tickle yourself. Because your brain knows this, it ignores the sensation.

People who get on roller coasters have a higher chance of getting a blood clot in the brain.

Your brain is made up of 80% water.

Once you reach the age of 35, you will start losing approximately 7,000 brain cells a day. These cells will never be replaced.

Your brain is move active and thinks more at night than during the day.

WOW! I'm a bit upset about the losing brain cells fact! I mean, is it just ALL downhill after 30??? I thought I'd get more brainy with age! Hopefully these scientists will figure out something to do about that one! Please! :)

Fall Fitness

As the temperatures drop a bit, to me this is a great time for getting out and doing more. In the summer, hot days make you want to just sit in the house or lounge around anywhere that there's some AC. When it's 90 degrees and counting, who really wants to be outside running and playing? Well, I know a few people that stay active no matter what the weather, but exercise nuts don't count! ;) However, most mere mortals can't take too much moving around when it's hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk!

That's one reason I really love it when fall rolls around. In cooler weather, your options actually can open up a bit. Here in New York where I live, fall is a beautiful thing when it rolls all the way in, especially in the parks and away from the city where the fall foliage is at its best.

For me, this is the most pleasurable time to go for long bike rides, long runs, and even do some hiking. What can be better incentive than being surrounded by the absolute beauty of nature? And if you have just a little bit of the photographer in you, you'll be able to snap some pretty amazing photos from the scenes along your trail in the right places, of which there are many this time of year.

So, instead of sitting down now that summer is over, it's really just now time to get up and out! No, don't go getting back to those lazy winter habits already, just because you know you'll get to cover up all the little sins with sweaters and all. Take advantage of these cooler temps, break out the long sleeve gear, and hit the road! This is the very best time to do it! ;)

Lose Weight and Do Some Good for the World

Ok. That's what I call it, but the actual name of it is Lose for Good, a weight loss and fund raising effort by Weight Watchers to help kill two birds with one stone: reduce the obesity rate and combat world hunger. How's THAT for some real problem solving ingenuity? I think it ROCKS!

weight watchers
The premise is, join Weight Watchers FREE online (or at one of the walk in centers), and for every pound of weight you lose, they will donate a pound of food, at a worth of up to $1,000,000, to people in impoverished areas of the world. So, when you lose, someone else wins. Besides just yourself. You can take an incentive like that and really run with it, folks, knowing that your effort is also helping to put food on someone else's table. There are groups forming all over the country right now of people banding together to help make an even bigger impact in this humanitarian effort. You can do this on your own, or start a group where you live. I am posting this to help spread the news, and hope that other fitness bloggers out here do the same. It's a very worthwhile cause. All you have to do to get started is click on this link: Lose for Good

Additional benefits of joining Weight Watchers online is that you get help and tools to track your weight loss progress. Don't delay, because the Weight Watchers 'Lose for Good' ends Oct 18th, 2008 (although I have not a clue why....they really should keep this going for at least a year). I'm also going to mass email this info to the fitness group I run here in NYC. Please help pass the word on. Once again, this is free. And you'll get to help a lot of people.

By the way, I am in no way affiliated with, working for, or profiting in any way from Weight Watchers or any of its programs. I just think that this is huge, and hope that you do too. Please do what you can to get involved.

Ok, folks. Let's go lose some weight and save the world! What do you say? ;)

Fitness Before Technology

****by Fitness Diva

Fitness Before Technology

There's no big secret that the obesity epidemic is on the rise in this day and age, causing a battery of diseases such as type 2 diabetes, chronic heart disease, hypertension, and joint instability and deterioration, among many other ailments. In a world that has seen amazing leaps and bounds in technology and electronic innovation, we've become a species that now finds more opportunity to sit on our butts and do far less work than our predecessors.

Remember the days of using a washboard, butter churning, and chopping your own wood? Probably not. Times were pretty hard back in those days, and for the most part, folks had to depend on their own elbow grease to get even the most basic of life's needs taken care of and tended to. Who needed a gym? Just working from sun up to sun down was enough to keep most folks in those days fit as hell. From keeping up house and land, to keeping food on the table, and even just staying sheltered and warm, you had to use a whole lotta muscle to survive!

Here's a rundown of calories burned doing daily chores and work.... the old fashioned way!

The following are based on these activities being done by someone weighing 150 lbs for a duration of 1 hour. For each 10 lbs more of weight, add approximately 1 additional cal per minute burned.
By the same token, for each 10 lbs less, subtract 1 cal per minute to estimate total calories burned.

Okay, let's roll up those sleeves, now, and get busy...

Sweeping 175 cals

Hand washing clothes (with a washboard) 420 cals

Hanging wash on clothesline 140 cals

Scrubbing the floor 510 cals

Washing windows 305 cals

Churning butter 276 cals

Chopping firewood 530 cals

Stacking firewood 410 cals

Milking a cow 207 cals

Pumping and carrying water 395 cals

Plowing a field (by hand w/ a horse) 450 cals

Planting 304 cals

Picking/harvesting crops 476 cals

Shucking corn 260 cals

Baling hay 530 cals

Shearing sheep 400 cals

Butchering a pig 398 cals

Shoveling snow 430 cals

There are a few here that I missed, I'm sure. If you think of any more, let me know and I'll post them. By the way, tired yet? That's a lot of work!

Need a Laugh Today??

Ok, enough with all the fitness for a sec. Sometimes laughter is the medicine we really need! I'd laugh all day long if somebody else would take care of the bills so I wouldn't have to work!

I just happened on to this vid, and I swear, I laughed through just about every second of it!! This is one of a series of videos by these two brothers from the Phillipines who are all the rage on YouTube with their crazy lip synching vids, shot through a cell phone camera! Write me back and tell me that this didn't make you laugh! I dare ya! Enjoy! ;)

Super Mom Jennifer Lopez Completes the Nautica Malibu Triathlon!

J Lo triathlon
Gotta give credit where credit is due!

Only six months after giving birth to her twins, Emme and Max, Jennifer Lopez finished her half mile swim, 18 mile bike and 4 mile run in just 2 hours and 23 minutes at the Malibu Triathlon this past weekend.

Jennifer Lopez triathlon
Training with Self Magazine's Lucy Danzinger, and her fitness trainer, Gunnar Peterson, Jen decided in her 8th month of pregnancy that she would do this event, not only to help get back in shape after the twins, but also to raise money for The Children's Hospital of Los Angeles.

In her efforts, she raised $127,000 in charitable donations.

Matthew McConaughey also participated in the event. His race time was 1 hour and 30 minutes.

J-Lo workout
Now that this arduous event is done, Jennifer is set to go back to work, and is about to start filming a new movie in the upcoming weeks.

You will also see her on the cover of the September issue of Self Magazine as their newly chosen most inspirational woman of the year!

From superstar, to super mom, and back again. And given the fact that she and Marc Anthony are caring for the kids the old fashioned way, without a barrage of nannies to do the dirty work, I just have to say, Go, Jennifer! You do that thing, girl!!
There is no stopping this woman...from doing anything!

Kudos again, Jennifer, for inspiring moms and women everywhere with your grit, determination and true Diva style! ;)

Everybody Loves a Winner...

At this moment in time, who in the televised world does not know that Michael Phelps won 8 gold medals in Beijing? You'd literally have to be living in a cave to not know.

Endorsement deals have come pouring through his roof, and now I see Michael everywhere; on magazine covers, TV commercials, billboards, ads and stories on the net, newspapers, anywhere that an image can be posted, there he is. He accomplished something that no one else has, and he worked hard to get it. Way to do it, Michael!

As gold, silver and bronze medals shine and provide limelight and accolades, 4th place finishers and also-rans fade quickly into the background and disappear completely from our minds. What were their names, again?

A life dedicated, a hope smashed, a dream put on hold, or now out of reach forever. That's the way it boils down for more than just a few. They also sacrificed, trained, committed, dedicated themselves completely. They prepared, they competed, they fought. However, not everyone can make it to the winner's circle.

This post is for the non medal winners, still out there training somewhere, still hoping, still dreaming. Another 4 years. Will next time be your time to shine? Guess it all remains to be seen. However, in the meantime, you are not forgotten!

Getting Fit Without Spending a Dime!

Many seem to think that getting fit involves plunking down fat membership fees to join a gym, buying every new fitness device and DVD that those infomercials pitch on TV, or shelling out money for a personal trainer. For some, this works, and is the way they prefer to go. I'm not knocking that; if not for these folks, I'd have no job! :)

But for some, these are not viable options. Well, guess what? If you're one of those in the latter group, then you don't have to deny yourself some fitness just because you don't have the disposable income to do so. You can get fit all on your own, no $$$$ required. All you have to do is take advantage of the resources right there at your fingertips.
In a perfect world, fitness would be free, and for you, it can be, and is. Stumped for ideas on how to go about it? Well, here are a few things to consider, and that you could be doing right now to get healthy and fit, and they don't cost a cent!

Whether you live in the city or in a more suburban or rural area, it doesn't matter. Right there in your home or neighborhood are tools just waiting for you to pick up and take advantage of. Here are but a few things you could be doing to add some free fitness to your lifestyle.

Now, I'm not even going to mention the park, because you know it's there, and if you haven't gone already, no one can drag you there! That one's too easy. Let's dig a bit deeper.....

Got stairs anywhere in or around your house? All in one gym right there. As the weather starts to get a bit colder, I'm looking at the stairs in my building with some renewed interest. Even if it's one short flight, you can use it to get a killer workout that will leave you exhausted and worked right down to the bone.

Staircase fitness moves:

walking up flights repeatedly
push ups on the stairs
toe tap hops
step and knee lifts
sideway climbs
backwards climb
running up the stairs (10 times, minimum!)
the plank
tricep dips

Now let's move into the kitchen or the living room. Surely there's a chair or two in there? Of course, there is! Let's use it!

Chair moves:
almost seated squats
seated leg extensions
tricep dips
standing or kneeling leg lifts
heel raises while resting your hands on the back of the chair
side leg lifts
crunches, you on the floor legs folded over the seat of the chair
bridges (on your back, one foot on the seat of the chair)

How about some weights? You have to get a bit inventive here, but most people have cans of something in their cupboad. You can either pick a pair of large canned goods, or even better yet, use two filled water bottles as weights. You have many sizes to choose from, from those long, large Poland Spring water bottles to the gallon ones with the handle. There go your weights right there!

Water bottle exercises:
bicep curls
overhead press
tricep kickbacks
back flyes
upright rows
hammer curls
chest flys (laying on your back)

Now, no matter where you live, there's a sidewalk. If you're somewhere in the suburbs or the country, you have a driveway. Let's use it!

Sidewalk and driveway moves:
sprints
walking lunges
walking front kicks
frog hops
side shuffles
jogging
running
jumping rope

And last, but not least, let's not forget the one thing you have available to you AT ALL TIMES, THE FLOOR. Yes, this state of the art piece of fitness equipment, the floor, can be found anywhere! In fact, you never go anywhere without it! You know this! Let's use it! ;)

Floor exercises:
crunches
plank
bridges
pilates exercises
push ups
mountain climbers
side plank
yoga poses
side lying or prone leg lifts
supermans
I could go on....

So, no more excuses! Who says you have to shell out big bucks to get fit? Not me! Getting fit without spending money is really just all about thinking outside the box, which I do daily. So should you!

The great thing about using those things so readily available to you is not just the fact that they're free, but also the absolute convenience of them. So, the next time you start thinking that you have to go join a gym, or buy the latest fitness gadget to get fit, think again. The opportunity to work out, and work out often is already there, right at your fingertips. Take advantage of it!

Another Brillante Award!

I am so honored!
I first received one of these about a month ago from Heidi, the Health Nut Wannabee Mom. This second one comes from one of my absolute favorite bloggers of all time, Durano, from The Spitting Vessel. As both of these blogs get my own nod for excellence, I have to just humbly say Thank you. It's great getting awards from those whose work you enjoy and admire. As is the tradition (which I am going to follow through on this time!) I now will select my own 7 favorite bloggers to give this illustrious award to!

brillante award

Among my favorites, I chose the most original, most interesting, most informative, most creative and also the funniest, in random order.

A blog you will find me hanging around alot, The Spitting Vessel
covers all aspects of life and noteworthy events with a worldwide view. An eloquent writer, Durano presents news, happenings and issues from every corner of the globe, and always in a thought provoking way. You MUST stop by there if you want to be well informed about things going on way beyond your own backyard (and sometimes right in it). He is brilliant, and I really enjoy reading him.

Now, unless you're living under a rock, you MUST know about Daisy the Curly Cat! This is my absolute favorite blog on the web, and I love checking in every day to see what that crazy Daisy is up to. Without a doubt, one of the most creatively put together blogs in the 'sphere, Daisy will keep you entertained with her adventures, her impeccable fashion sense and killer outfits, jokes and riddles (some of which I don't get!), and her hilarious little facial expressions. I sometimes wonder if she's part human! Even if you're not into cats, this is a blog not to be missed. You will ALWAYS be entertained!

I always check in on Steven Humor to get my laugh or WTF? of the day. He posts some of the funniest and most bizzarre videos on the net for your viewing pleasure. If you want to see things you will not believe with your own two eyes, head on over there. It's definitely worth the trip! ;)

Mike at Live Life 365 gets big points for originality, with his funny videos and thought provoking essays on life and health. He's even made me laugh once or twice! ;) Very good blog here!

One of my favorite peers, Health Nut Wannabe Mom
writes a blog that keeps you up to date on healthy eating and ways to keep your body disease free. I have enjoyed discovering her blog in the past few months or so.

For those who are trying to figure out all the ins and outs of blogging and having a successful website, Atniz puts it all out there, no holds barred, no secrets left behind. I have gotten such valuable information from her blog on marketing, blogging, SEO, improving your page rank, etc. A MUST for anyone that's out here trying to rise above the fray on the www. Greatly informative blog.

And last, but not least,Black Tennis Pros is a well put together blog highlighting black tennis players on the pro circuit. Her coverage is in depth and thorough, and you'll get to know what's going on with some players who don't get as much of the limelight as the top players. I always tune in there for the big tennis events.

And that, is my list of favorite blogs. I hope that you all keep it up so I can continue to read you for many years to come! Let's keep on blogging! ;)

Are Friends and Family Sabotaging Your Weight Loss?

by The Fitness Diva

Are Friends and Family Sabotaging Your Weight Loss?

You've embarked upon a diet and exercise plan, and you're psyched up and ready to give it your best. However, the only one who seems supportive and happy about it all is you. Your spouse continues to pack the fridge with fatty foods and sugary drinks, making a point to eat fast food and calorie rich treats in your presence, your friends seem to only want to engage in activities that are sure to derail your eating plan, like partying and attending eating engagements, and your kids cry for attention every time you head out the door to the gym, or to go for a quick jog.

Why does it feel like the ones you love are trying to help you fail?
Well, the answers are not that hard to come by when you really think about it.

While for the most part, those closest to you only want to see you happy, they can also be afraid of the changes that occur when you take a proactive stand at achieving something new in your life. Sometimes they're afraid that they'll get left behind, or that they will somehow become less of a priority in your life as you become this assertive, confident, accomplished new person.

Let's face it; losing weight is empowering, and it's bound to change your personality in ways that threaten and shake the foundation of those that depend on you. Especially spouses, mates, close relatives, children, and sometimes even your very best friends. People that are used to you putting your needs aside to be there for them will sometimes express the most resistance to your newfound sense of self.

For a husband or boyfriend, seeing you become more confident and attractive is definitely a threat. It's a known fact that many partners actually take an active role in sabotaging their other half's self esteem because of their own possessiveness and low self esteem issues. The better you start to look and feel about yourself, the bigger a threat it becomes to the hold they have on you. They'd rather see you remain overweight and insecure. That way they'll have less fear of you ever wanting to leave.

Is your spouse or girlfriend complaining that you work out too much, or that your workouts are taking time away from them? Do they ridicule your fitness and weight loss efforts instead of supporting you completely? If so, this might be a sign of an unhealthy relationship where the person's need to control and possess you supercedes seeing you healthy and doing well.

The Dollar Menu Made Me Do It

So, I'm walking by a Wendy's this afternoon, and a huge banner outside features this new product they have. A bacon stacker. And it's ONLY 99 cents!!! I'm like, Oh My God...there just went somebody's diet! Whose, I don't know, but for sure, somebody's!

Dollar menus in fast food joints are all the rage. Almost every major fast food retailer has one. I know them well. I was deliriously happy when they were first invented about 8(?) years ago. A dollar menu meant that you could go into Wendy's or Mickey D's with 6 or 7 dollars and go buck wild. Burger King has its own, too.

The McDonalds across the street from where I used to live sold double cheeseburgers on their dollar menu. Talk about a pig in heaven. I ate so many of them over about a year, that I finally just got completely sick of them. I won't ever eat another. I exceeded my limit. I remember being on the line one day, when a guy came in and ordered 6. SIX! And a super size coke. He then sat and proceeded to polish off every last one. I was just like, WOW. Amazing! No wonder as a nation we're so fat.

Yes, I blame the dollar menu for part of the obesity epidemic in America. Nowadays, you don't have to have a ton of cash to stock up on these calorie heavy, fried, greasy goodies. They made sure that they're accessible to everyone! Only have a dollar? No problem! Come on in and get your dose of cholesterol too. Don't get left behind! We'll make sure that you, too, are included in the race to become as unhealthy as you can be! ;)

Now, it's around 3pm as I pass by this Wendy's on our main avenue, and as I pass by, I see that there's a packed line inside, snaking around about 4 times. Guess who it's comprised of? Kids coming home after school. A boat load of 'em.
Yep. The dollar menu works just great for them and their little allowances. They can come in and stuff their faces with fries, burgers and softies with the best of them. Only takes a couple bucks, and you're in! Pass me the ketchup!

Now, I know I can't blame the fast food industry for everything. Self policing is something we all need to learn how to do. Also, making sure that our children develop healthier eating habits and don't cave in to the call of the fast food chains when they're hungry is key, and is definitely the responsibility of parents. Yes, we are responsible for ourselves and our own actions. No one puts a gun to your head and makes you go inside Wendy's. Or McDonald's. Or any of them.

But these dollar menu places sure don't make it easy, do they? I'm just sayin'... ;)

How Novak Djokovic Let Bitterness Defeat Him

I love Novak Djokovic. Don't get me wrong. LOVE him. Love his personality, his style, his tennis game. From the moment he began to gain prominence on the tennis circuit, I've been on his team. He's likable as hell. Well...at least, he used to be.

Flash forward to the 2008 season, and I can't help but to notice that that effervescent, engaging, entertaining, completely appreciative personality of his has changed a bit.

Some might speculate that it's due to injuries and physical ailments that plague him on the long, grueling tennis tour that these guys do year in and year out. Maybe that's so. All I know is that the Novak Djokovic that I personally have gotten to know and love was not the one that showed up at the US Open this year.

Novak has been gaining a reputation of crying wolf when it comes to ailments during tennis matches. Whether it's legit, or not, only Nole knows....

Andy Roddick made light of all these illness claims at a press conference, and in a quite entertaining way. Hell, even I had to chuckle, although it's really not good sportsmanship to joke about someone's injuries. Wasn't the best moment for Andy Roddick, really. Funny? Yeah, it kinda was. Should he have said what he said? No. But ya know what? It worked. Those words had Djokovic steaming during that entire match they played.

Novak allowed Roddick's snarky little comments to get to him. He got angry about it. Put a huge chip on his shoulder about it. And that, in my humble opinion, is why he didn't beat Federer in the semis the following match. He let these emotions get to him and it messed with his head completely. He then wanted to win for spite, it seemed, instead of for the joy of just being the best, like he used to. It made him lose concentration and focus. You are never at your best when you're angry.

As we all know, trash talking is part and parcel of any and every sport. A true champion knows how to roll with the punches and allow the BS to roll off his/her shoulders. As far as I can see, Djokovic has yet to develop this skill. If he ever really intends to become the #1 tennis player in the world, he had better develop a slightly thicker skin, and quickly.

In everyone's life, a little negativity will fall. It's how you let it affect you (or not) that counts more. You can either let it defeat you, like it did Djokovic, or you can use it to your advantage. Let it spur you on to be even more successful.
Better. Fiercer. Stronger.
And that, is the absolute BEST way to win.

Night Blading...

So, some of my roller blade buddies and I were out in Central Park the other night, and I just have to say, Central Park is BANGIN'!! It is just one of the most amazing places in the world to me. Once saddled with a bad reputation and thought of as a place where one had to worry about muggings, assaults and other crimes, the past 20+ years have seen our park go through some great changes. For one thing, when you go in there at night, there are lights everywhere! It's lit up like Christmas! What I love about it most is that after dark, you can find large numbers of bikers, bladers, runners and all manner of people just hanging out and enjoying the view like it's the middle of the afternoon. That's New York, baby! We really NEVER sleep! ;)

Me and my crazy night blading friends. We just look tough as hell, don't we? ;)

I think we look like a roller blading Super Hero team. Hmmmm.... wonder what my super power would be..... ;)

Here is a shot I took of the duck pond at night. What you're looking at is the reflection of the park lights on the pond, with the tops of Upper East Side high rises peeking over the tops of the trees. I put my camera on the Twilight setting to get this shot, and it came out kind of crazy, but I like it! ;)

Central Park is really so beautiful at night. My meager picture just can't even begin to capture it!

Serena Williams Poised to Take 3rd US Open Title

This Saturday evening, under the bright lights in Arthur Ashe Stadium in Flushing Meadows, Serena Williams will be going up against Yelena Jankovic for what will be her 3rd US Open title, if she wins it.
Having beaten her sister, Venus in the quarterfinal, and dispatching Dinar Safina in the semis, Serena won some tough battles against some of the top players on the circuit this year, while making it look easy. Having missed singles gold at the Olympics, and also failing to claim any of the 4 major titles (yet) this year, here's hoping that she wins the big one in Flushing Meadows!

Yelena Jankovic is playing her very best tennis lately, matching her opponents stroke for power stroke in her matches. Her game is really starting to mature and improve, so Saturday's match promises to be a great contest. Serena had better be bringing her A game. Judging by the way she's been playing the past two weeks, I'm not doubting that she will. If she wins this, it will be her 9th Grand Slam title.

You all know that I am such a Serena Williams fan. I cannot help but to root for her! Good luck on Saturday, Serena! I will be watching! :)

Update: Due to torrential rains, the US Open Women's Final has been moved to Sunday, Sept 7th at 9pm EST.

I personally think that this is great! With one more day to rest up, these ladies will definitely be coming out and putting their absolute best tennis on the court!

Chocolate Is Good for the Soul

....and good for your body, too. In moderation, of course!

The cacao bean, first cultivated and used by the Olmec people, who lived in the tropical lowlands of south-central Mexico, and some time after by the Mayans and Aztecs, has been used in dozens of ways, including medicinal.

Chocolate, as we know it today, took a few centuries to evolve into the sweet, delicious, to die for treat that we all know and love. Besides its cocoa-ey, creamy taste, chocolate really does make you feel good. It's not just your imagination!
Here are jut a few of the 300 agents found in chocolate that help bring you those yummy, feel good vibes:

Seratonin - Acts as an antidepressant

Phenylethylamine - A mild mood elevator

Theobromine - A stimulant, related to caffeine, but giving a calmer, more relaxed after effect

Oleic acid - A monounsaturated fat, which can raise good cholesterol

Potassium

Magnesium

Vitamins B1, B2, D and E

Anitoxidants

Flavanoids - Help keep blood vessels elastic

Bet you didn't know that....

The smell of chocolate can increase theta brain waves, thereby relaxing you

Cacao contains antibacterial agents that can help prevent tooth decay

Drinking hot chocolate before a meal can lessen your appetite

Men who eat chocolate live a bit longer than those who don't

So, the next time you're feeling the need to have a bite or two of chocolate, go ahead and have it! It's not as bad as you've been led to believe. Unless you consume it in excess, of course. While chocolate does have many positive things going for it, you can't forget the high sugar content in most chocolate confections. That's where all the calories come from

So, indulge, but only on occasion. Who doesn't need to feel a little good every now and then? Keep it to a minimum, and you can feel good AND look good, darling! ;)

Is Compassion Learned or Innate?

So, while training my early AM client this morning, we got into a discussion about compassion and considerateness. She was recalling an incident that happened to her one day on the train. She got dizzy, and began teetering on her feet. Another passenger saw her swaying and that her eyes were glazing over, and came to her aid. Seeing that it was mere seconds before the girl would just totally collapse, the helper asked a man sitting in the seat nearest to them if he would please let my client sit down in his seat before she hit the floor. The man angrily and adamantly refused, saying "why don't you ask someone else?" My client said that the man was about in his 50's. He sat there glaring, refusing to even consider getting up, even though my client was visibly ill and fading fast. Someone else finally got up and offered their seat. I found that man's reaction shocking.

"Oh, that's nothing compared to what happened to a friend of mine on the train" she informed me while my mouth was still agape at her own story. According to her, another friend of hers, who is extremely anemic, has been known to flat out pass out cold with no warning on occasion. One day she passed out on the train right in front of the doors. Upon seeing her hit the floor, no one rose to help her. People actually stepped over her to get in and out of the train. She recalls waking up, still lying on the floor, and spying an empty seat nearby, she pulled herself up off the floor and sat down. The other passengers on the train barely raised an eyebrow. She said that one lady did ask if she was okay after she was already seated. But what I can't get past is the fact that THEY STEPPED OVER HER instead of stopping to see if she was okay. Okay? Wow.

Now, I know that these streets have gotten pretty mean these days, and to find someone that gives one whit what happens to you when you're out there is not the most common thing in the world. But I'm thinking that we've gone a looong way down the wrong road when it comes to how we treat each other lately. Just the other day, I saw a pregnant woman on a crowded train. She was so pregnant that I was feeling some pains! Well, not one person offered up a seat, and there were plenty of men on that train, seated right by her. Whatever happened to that seemingly more extinct by the day species, better known as 'the gentleman'? I no longer expect them to hold open doors, because in this city, it's really 50/50 on that, but in some cases, yes, you should try to be considerate of others, male or female. I, myself, was standing, and when I got off the train a few stops later, so still was she.

So, I've been wondering what makes certain people compassionate and caring, and others callous and unconcerned? Is it a natural part of your personality and self, or is it something learned? I know that psychopaths and sociopaths lack the ability to have compassion, in most cases, but that's a biological aberration, right? What about people with normal brains and psyches? What either makes it happen or not happen for them? I really wonder.

I know that I'm compassionate a lot of the time, but not always. It depends on the circumstance. Seeing a disabled person needing help or someone missing a limb or who is horribly disfigured is an instant compassion trigger for me, but a bum begging on the street that looks healthy enough to work doesn't stir my heart at all. Maybe it's because I'm judging them. You can't judge someone who is disabled, right? I'm also wondering if that's part of the puzzle. Are we more able to be compassionate towards some people, but not so much towards others? Are we predisposed to view some people as more worthy of help than others? And once again, is it natural, or is it learned? I don't remember my parents teaching me to be compassionate, but they did teach me to be polite. Perhaps that was what helped form my ability to be considerate, and thereby, compassionate, but I would also like to think that I'm just naturally like that.

So, what do you think? Does compassion exist naturally within you, or is it learned? Does it manifest itself (or not) during a specific time of your own development as a person? Do we all start out with it, and then, through various life experiences, either lose it or develop even more of it? Does it fade with age and time?

Seeing the way so many people seem to have very little of it these days really makes me wonder. Food for thought!
