Black Olympic History

On this last day of Black History Month, I'd like to post about the history of blacks in the Olympics. I'd actually like to shed light on some of the lesser mentioned athletes that paved the way for Olympic greats like Muhammed Ali, Flo Jo, Jackie Joyner Kersee, the Williams sisters and Carl Lewis. We all know the glory and the stories of these luminous Olympic legends, but you might not know about some of those that came first, and how hard they had to fight to even be allowed to compete in the games.

In 1904, George Poage and Joseph Stadler became the first blacks to compete in the Olympics, which were held in the US. Stadler won a silver and bronze medal in the long jump and Poage won a bronze medal for finishing third in the 400-meter hurdles. There is a bit of controversy regarding which is the first black person to win a medal at the games, since the order of the events is not well documented.

In London, 1908, the first black olympic athlete ever to win a gold medal was John Taylor, a member of the 1,600-meter relay team.

In 1924, William Dehart Hubbard became the first black American to win an individual gold medal in the long jump in Paris.

In 1932, Louise Stokes and Tydia Pickett became the first black women to make an Olympic team. However, when they arrived to compete in Los Angeles, they were replaced by white women. Stokes was replaced by a white female and prevented from competing once again when she made the 400-meter relay team in 1936.

In 1936, Jesse Owens won four gold medals in the 100-meters, 200-meters, long jump and 400-meter relay. His teammate, John Woodruff became the first to win a gold medal in the Berlin games.

In 1948 in London, Audrey Patterson became the first black woman to win a medal in the 200-meter. Alice Coachman was the first to win gold in the high jump.

In 1956, Milton Campbell was the first black person to win the decathlon in the Games in Melbourne, Australia.

Wilma Rudolph is the first woman to win three gold medals at one Olympiad, finishing first in the 100-meters, 200 meters, and 400-meter relay in Rome in 1960.

These, among many others, are the olympic athletes that paved the way for all the greats that came later. Back in their day, however, they had to deal with blatant racism, not only from stadium spectators, but from fellow athletes, team members and Olympic officials. Some even had to be assigned separate living accommodations during the games because white athletes did not want to room with them.
Many came home after winning their medals to experience scorn and resentment from some of their own countrymen instead of the admiration and accolades that Olympic heroes usually enjoy.
However, through all adversity, they came, they performed, and they competed their way into Olympic history.

Let's make sure they are not forgotten!

Friday Fitness Challenge...

So, I'm all about action. Enough with all the dispensing of health info, exercise tips, and yadda, yadda, yadda. At least for today. Action speaks louder than words! Great cliche, that one! Let's use it! ;)
So, instead of telling you about the wonders of green beans, or imploring you to try the Urban Rebounder (which I LOVE!), or trying to get you to embrace running, I'm going to give you a lil' challenge this weekend.
Simple. Get someone else (who doesn't usually) to work out. Either with or without you. Haaa! And you thought I was gonna say "do X amount of pushups, run this long, etc, etc", right? Nope!
My challenge to you is to get someone else around you, a loved one, spouse, a friend, a child, hell, even your boss....lol, to get up and do some type of physical activity or exercise. Umm, just FYI....dogs, cats and other pets don't count! This challenge is for humans only!

Now, quick tip: it's much easier if you get them to do an activity WITH you. I'm already giving you a cheat here. It doesn't have to be formal exercise like you would do in a park or at the gym. As long as it's a strenuous physical activity that lasts for more than a half hour, you've done your job. No, shopping doesn't count!!!
Even if that does make you sweat!!! If it's not actual exercise, try to make sure it's some recreational or sports like type of activity.

Okay! I'm going to check back on this! Post what you got someone to do by Monday, and the best one wins a cool little prize. I'm not sayin' what yet. You will just have to wait and see!

Okay, guys, now this weekend YOU get to be the motivator. Think you can rise to the occasion? I hope so! We will soon see! ;)

What's Your Favorite Low Cal /Healthy Snack?

I love snacking! Back in the day, it was Twinkies, Yodels, cheese fries and candy bars that kept me in trouble. I could do Snickers and 3 Musketeer bars all day long! Well, now that I no longer have the metabolism of a 14 year old, I just had to let those goodies go! (and tearfully, I might add!)

That doesn't mean I gave up snacking altogether, though. I'm just reaching for smarter, healthier, low cal items to shove down my throat with abandon.
Since I can't give up chocolate completely, one thing I've found that still scratches my chocolate itch is those low calorie, sugarless fudgesicles.

Me and these little babies get along just fine, and at a mere 40 calories a pop, I don't ruin my diet if I decide to have two. (Which I usually do)

Another thing I've always loved is a good, salty, sour pickle. We used to buy the big ones out of the deli when I was a kid and suck on them all day. I buy the New York Deli Style ones at the supermarket now. High in sodium, sure, but it's not like I'm going to eat a ton of them. On the label, it says 0 calories a serving. I don't know how the heck that's possible, but, I'll take it! ;)

You've also heard me talk about how much I love edamame, and although it's a little higher in calories (100 or so cals per cup), the health benefits of eating soy make them well worth it. Even at 2 cups, you're not going too far overboard, really.
I buy mine with the husk still on them so I can't eat them so fast.

And rounding out my favorites, the lovely, succulent watermelon. It's hard to get good, perfectly ripe watermelon all year round where I live (you can get it all year -just not top notch quality in the off seasons), but when I find a good one, I'm on it! At about 40 cals for 10 balls of melon, it's a good tasty choice that I really enjoy. And....I always eat just a bit more than that! Hey, it's watermelon...no worries! ;)

I also love sauteed mushrooms and grilled asparagus. I know some wouldn't call those snacks, but they work for me! Can eat a big bowl of both and be just as happy as you please!
So, what are your favorites? I'm always looking for good, low calorie, healthy snack ideas. Maybe you've got one I should check out!

Use Your Passions to Get and Stay Fit

Exercise isn't always about hitting the gym, jogging, lifting weights or hopping up on the treadmill. Most times, we do these things because we know we should...not necessarily because we love doing them. Truthfully, running on the treadmill for me is not fun. I call it "40 minutes of hell". I'll do it, but you won't see me laughing and smiling about it until it's over! ;)

What I have found is that doing some physical activity that you really enjoy and are passionate about can beat a workout at the gym any old day. When you're doing activities that you really enjoy, you tend to keep at it much longer. The only time you look at the clock is to insure that you get even more time to keep doing your thing.

Almost everyone has some thing that they really enjoy doing, be it dancing, outdoor sports, or just playing and tussling around with your kids. Tap into that passion you have and use it for your fitness whenever you can!

For me it's easy, because I love doing a ton of things; roller blading, playing tennis, biking, snowboarding, and a few more I can't think of at the moment. When warmer temps roll around, you will see me out on my blades with a quickness. Also, as soon as tennis season comes, I can't wait to slip into one of my little tennis skirts and hit the court to work on my inner Serena! I will play until I can't lift the racquet anymore. Now that I have a passion for snowboarding, I try not to miss an opportunity to get out on the slopes and work on new skills. A few hours of that leaves you completely worked. And unlike the gym, it's not something I have to push myself to do...I look forward to these activities. I'm like a kid outside playing when I'm doing them.

dance like no one is watching...really!

Don't like sports? Well, heck, I bet you like music, right? Who doesn't? Even if you don't attend a formal dance class, you can always just throw some of your favorite high energy tunes on and just dance up a storm in your living room. I do that from time to time, and when I do it, I dance like a woman possessed! Be sure to have a wall mirror close by - it ups the creativity, trust me! ;) It's so much fun, and not only that, it uplifts your spirits. You always feel great after a good dance!

Got kids? Use them! You know what I mean. Running around and playing ball or other games with your little ones is a great way to get some exercise. I know all you mommies know what I'm talking about! I have nephews and nieces, all at great ages; 6, 7, 8 and 10. I play catch with them, teach them how to bike and skate, and next winter, plan to take them up to the resort with me so that they can learn how to ski. Fun for them, fun for me - everybody wins! ;) And as I've stated in past articles, it's also a great way to instill a love of physical activity and exercise in your kids.

Me taking a well needed break after tackling those slopes!

So, don't feel like hitting the gym 3 to 5 times a week? No problem. Take a couple of those days you would have spent sweating on an elliptical and go take a dance class instead. Get some friends together weekly to do a physical sport or activity you all enjoy. Get a bike and start exploring. There's a thousand ways to do this! Just make sure it's something that you really love and are passionate about. That makes it easy! ;)

Are You Psychic Like Me?

And I really am psychic. In a weird, random sorta way. I have premonitions about people and things. And music. Now, before you think I'm crazy, let me explain.

I will have a random thought about a person that I never see or think of, and then, later that day, the person will either call me out of the blue, or I'll see them on the train or somewhere that I go. Usually, it's a person I've not seen for ages. That has happened to me many times over the years. Another thing that happens is that I'll have some random thought, like, about something I haven't eaten in a very long time...say chocolate covered cherries or some rare dish I had at some other time and place. I'll happen to be reading a paper later, or surfing the net, and then POW!, out of nowhere, I see a picture of the thing I thought of either hours and sometimes just moments ago! Or it will appear on a TV show or commercial. That happens frequently too! It's a bit nuts! Also, it happens with music. I'll be thinking about some random song that I like that isn't played frequently, or that I haven't heard in a long, long time. Then, I'll happen to turn on the radio, or be walking down the street later and hear that same random song playing from a passing car or something! Really! And it always makes me go "whoa!".
This is something I've experienced for as long as I can remember. I don't know if there's a name for this particular phenomenon that I experience from time to time, but it lets me know that I'm just a bit "special". lol Or maybe not. I mean, does that happen to most people? And it's not something that I can control or tap into. Heck, if I could do that, I would have put it to good use and won the lottery a few times already.
Do you have psychic experiences or premonitions? I just had another one today, and I really got to thinking about it. I have a complaint against a NYC bus driver, and I filed the complaint weeks ago and forgot about it. It crossed my mind today around noon, and I thought to myself "I wonder if they're really investigating this thing or will it just get pushed to the back of a drawer somewhere". Well, don't you know, an hour later, the MTA office called me to let me know that they are still investigating the incident! Wow!
Ok.... I think I now need to really start asking myself some better questions and having more fruitful random thoughts, like "how can I get a ton of money in 5 days?" and then wait for the answer to just come to me! LOL! Hey, who knows, just might work, eh?
Anyway, these are just some crazy, out of the blue occurrences that I just have to sit back and wonder about! Are you psychic, too? Or is it just me? ;)

Getting Regular Check Ups - An Important Part of Your Health and Fitness Routine

With all the attention paid to diet and exercise, there's one more thing you just CAN'T forget! And that is going to your general doctor to get a yearly check up.
Even the healthiest looking, fittest person in the world should not overlook this critically important element of maintaining a healthy body and life.

It also doesn't matter how "young" or physically active you are, you should still go, and MEN, you need to stop waiting until you're close to your 40's and 50's in age before you start making those regular trips to the doctor. It is well known that men won't go to the doctor unless something is really wrong, and generally feel that they don't need as much medical maintenance as women. NOT true! Your heart health, sexual health and screening for various ailments such as cancers, hypertension, diabetes and more illnesses than I can name should be paid attention to from the time you're able to walk to the doctor by yourself.

I have my next annual check up coming soon, and I'm actually looking forward to it.
The doctor always tells me that I have the cardiovascular system and reflexes of a 20 year old. ;)
I love it! Even though I'm just a (ahem) few little years past 20. haaaa!
I also enjoy seeing my really good blood pressure reading, learning my cholesterol number, and all those little things they tell you when the results come back.
My next step will be a total blood workup so that I can make sure I don't have any deficiencies of particular vitamins or minerals since I've drastically changed my diet from what it was years ago. That is very important, especially for those who cut calories and diet frequently. You must make sure that your body is getting everything it needs to function well, and a complete blood screening is a good way to do it.

So, if you haven't already done so, put a visit to the doc on your list of healthy things to do. In many cases, you'll be glad you did! ;)

The Fitness Diva's Hot Gadget Review - Carmen Electra's Electrapole

"Whooooo, it's gettin' hot in here...."
What would we do without those innovative little brains out there that keep coming up with new ways for us to get fit? I don't know, but they sure are working on making your workout life much more fun!
I've seen this thing around for a minute, but now have decided to take a closer look at the Carmen Electra Electrapole, which you can now find at a department store near you.
You might recall, I did a review of Carmen's Strippaerobics video last year, so why not just progress and step it on up to the big leagues, just like Carmen? I mean, just put a stripper pole right in your living room!
With the Carmen Electra Electrapole, you can do just that, and let the fitness, festivities and fireworks begin! There's no video with this thing.... but that just leaves some room for you to tap into your own creative mind and just go wild!

Now, we all know that pole dancing has gone maintstream, and classes for it can now be found in just about any city. You will get a good sweat going on, depending on how long you stay dancing and playing on it. Fitness fact** - An hour of pole dancing can burn around 300 calories, and more than that if you're doing pole climbs, pole jumps, practicing hanging from your ankles, and not just doing the Maypole ring around the rosie.
Once you master the upside down hang, that's the perfect opportunity to do some serious reverse crunches! Ok, let's go. You can DOOO it!! ;)

Be careful.... don't hurt yourself! And be sure to wedge that pole between your floor and ceiling really tight. I have no plans to buy this thing, but if any of you already have it, please report back and tell me how it's going! Are you still using your pole every day, or has it just become this odd yet cool conversation piece in the middle of your den/living room/ basement that the kids seem to get on more than you do? Do tell!

Here is the link to the actual Electrapole website.

Here is how to install the damn thing! ;)

***Carmen Electra did not pay me to review this product. But she should have! ;)

Add Some Color to Your Diet!

Beyond just watching the carbs and fat content in your daily diet, you really could add a boost, not on in your quest to maintain a healthy weight, but also to fight off diseases and give your body some powerful fuel to help it run better and keep you healthy all the way around. The easiest way to do this is to make sure that colorful foods are a regular part of your daily diet. No, I'm not talking about pizza or cotton candy! I'm referring to the colorful veggies rich in antioxidants and other agents that speed and maintain cellular repair, strengthen your immune system, and help to improve all your bodily functions.

Here are a few that should absolutely be on your daily diet list:

Green foods:
Cucumbers, field greens, broccoli, alfalfa, green beans, okra
These foods can contain chlorella, kelp, dulse, green algae and spirulina, just to name a few. These can help eliminate toxins in your body, reduce high blood pressure, give you energy and also improve the look of your skin, hair and nails. Okra contains vitamin B6 and C, fiber, calcium, and folic acid. Stop saying that it's slimy! Just eat it! ;)

Yellow foods:
Yellow squash, peppers,
Contain querecin and lutein which can help improve your eyesight and also can be anti-inflammatory. Yellow squash contains vitamins B1 and C, folic acid, pantothenic acid, fiber, potassium, vitamin B6 and niacin. Yellow peppers are high in bioflavanoids and vitamin C.

Red foods
Tomatoes, red peppers
Red foods can contain lycopene, which is a powerful antioxidant helpful in preventing cancer.

Orange foods
Carrots, oranges, peppers
You can find vitamin A and carotenes (which the body converts into vitamin A). With these you can improve and maintain the health of your eyesight, fight off cancer and also help facilitate enzyme production in the liver and sex organs. Oranges contain betacaortene, folic acid, potassium, thiamin, and vitamin B6, all of which provide innumberable health benefits to the body.

Purple foods
Blueberries, eggplant, grapes
Antioxidants such as anthocyanines found in purple foods can help improve vision and blood circulation. Eggplant is high in fiber and contains potassium, folate, magnesium and niacin as well as copper, manganese and thiamine, and can aid in digestion and protect against heart disease. Grapes contain polyphenols, which can help protect against heart disease.

So put down that drab, brown burger, and get some color on your plate! Aside from being rich in antioxidants and vitamins, these colorful foods can help you maintain a healthy weight, improve your physical appearance and prolong your life!

A Sports Lover's Fantasy Weekend Smorgasbord!

Wow! I am still reeling from the euphoria! The past few days have been a sports lover's dream! My 3 favorite sports all rocking championship contests back to back to back! I am one happy camper!

First off, the Australian open, which saw some of the most awesome playing from the men's section EVER, ending with the win of Rafael Nadal over Roger Federer for the 2009 Australian Open title! Incredible matches through all the rounds on the men's side from Federer, Roddick, Tsonga, Monfis, Verdasco, Murray, Blake, Baghdatis and more, not to mention Marat Safin, the sexiest man in tennis! Safin has declared this grand slam to be the last match of his career. Say it ain't so, Safin! I will now have to ogle and admire him by doing Google searches! ;)

Federer wanted this one bad. He still has yet to match Pete Sampras record for grand slam wins. Next time, Roger.

On the ladies side, Serena Williams just dominated the field after she finally settled into her rhythm, dismantling Kuznetsova, Dimentieva and Dinara Safin on her way to winning the 2009 title! And she did it in true champion style!

Then, Saturday night saw a dream mixed martial arts card that included awesome fights from Karo Parisyan, Stefan Bonner (who got totally outclassed and outfought by UFC rookie, Jon Jones), Clay Guida, Thiago Silva and the headliner match up of BJ Penn and George St. Pierre (who I still love, and would marry at the drop of a dime!), with St. Pierre retaining his UFC welterweight title by knocking out Penn in the fourth round...... The fights were fantastic, well contested and also well worth the price of PPV... even though I got to see them for free! ;)

Capping it all off was Superbowl XLIII with a hotly contested match between the Arizona Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Did you see that clutch catch by Steelers receiver Santonio Holmes at the very end of the game? That play will be shown on highlight reels for years to come! Great way to take back the lead to win the game, and GO, Steelers! I've been a Steeler's fan from way back in the day. They are my favorite team after my NY Giants, NY Jets, and Philly Eagles. It was great to see them win!

Okay...that just about does it! I am overloaded on all the sports induced adrenaline and excitement, and have just about screamed my vocal cords hoarse in three different arenas!

Congrats to all the deserving winners, and man, I so cannot wait until next year when this awesome sports trifecta rolls around yet again! (of course, only if the UFC cooperates and books another high calibre card at the same time next year to complete this awesome lineup!).

Lovin' the afterglow of a great sports weekend! yeah! :) I am now going to go and sleep it off! :D

Serena Williams is #1.... Again!

A mere 59 minutes into the 2009 Australian Open Women's Final, Serena Williams clinched her 10th career grand slam title, defeating Dinara Safin of Russia 6-0, 6-3.

Dinara Safin just didn't have a chance. Serena came out and in the first set, quickly pummeled Safin 6 games to love, barely allowing a point, and breaking the Russian's serve the entire set. In the second, Safin managed to lift her game just a bit, but it was still no match for Serena's power, determination and undeniable talent. Safin just got overpowered and overwhelmed. Perhaps the nerves that come along with such a huge grand slam event can explain her weak, lackluster play.

The second set ended 6-3, crowning Serena the Australian Open Women's champion for the 4th time. She is now the #1 female tennis player for the 3rd time. She has also just become the most paid female athlete ever, having earned more game winnings during her career than any other female in any other sport.

Just the day before, she and sister Venus also captured the Australian Open's 2009 women's doubles title, which to Serena must have just been the cherry on the cake!

I'm hoping that Serena continues to stay healthy, formidable and fierce so that we can further witness this mega talent whipping that ball at speeds of up to 130+ mph at her opponents for many more years to come! Go, Serena!
