Cool Body Facts #3

Let's dig a little deeper.... Here are a few cool facts about those insides! ;)

1. The largest internal organ is the small intestine. Your small intestine is four times as long as the average adult is tall.

2, The human heart creates enough pressure to squirt blood 30 feet. Pumping blood through your body quickly and efficiently takes quite a bit of pressure resulting in the strong contractions of the heart and the thick walls of the ventricles which push blood to the body.

3. The acid in your stomach is strong enough to dissolve razorblades. Hydrochloric acid, the type found in your stomach, is not only good at dissolving food, but can also eat through many types of metal.

4. The human body is estimated to have 60,000 miles of blood vessels. To put that in perspective, the distance around the earth is about 25,000 miles, making the distance your blood vessels could travel if laid end to end more than two times around the earth.

5. You get a new stomach lining every three to four days. The mucus-like cells lining the walls of the stomach would soon dissolve due to the strong digestive acids in your stomach if they weren’t constantly replaced.

6. Women’s hearts beat faster than men’s. On average women tend to be smaller than men and have less mass to pump blood to. However, women’s and men’s hearts can actually act quite differently, especially when experiencing a heart attack, and many treatments that work for men must be adjusted or changed entirely to work for women.

7. You could remove a large part of your internal organs and survive. It’s possible to survive even with the removal of the stomach, the spleen, 75 percent of the liver, 80 percent of the intestines, one kidney, one lung, and virtually every organ from the pelvic and groin area. You might not feel too great, but the missing organs wouldn’t kill you.

Okay..... I don't know about walking around with only half of my organs intact. I think I'd just check on out if that ever happened! ;)

Good post, a lot of people survive and only 10 percent of their brain is functioning also. I see and talk to many every day and they do not even realize it. Have a great day.

Health Assistant is right lolz!

Thanks for sharing. I did not know that a person could still live even without stomach or the other organs located on lower parts of the body...

Missing organs would probably hurt your career as a personal trainer and boxer, and it would probably seriously put a crimp on your sex life.

This post begs the philosophical question....survival vs. quality of life. At what point does staying alive at all costs take a back seat to the quality and experience of living a life?

I think that's a great post topic for another time.

Cheers!

ha haaa, Dwayne. yes, I run into those same 10% of a brain people too...constantly! too funny!

Matt, I am totally a "quality of life" devotee. I have already told my family many a time "if I'm in an accident that turns me into a vegetable, DNR" ....Do Not Resusitate. And I mean that. I don't want to be alive at any cost.
What makes me live and breathe is all the things I'm able to do with my body. I live to run, jump, bike, rollerblade, exercise, dance, and try anything that's physical. It's the spice of life for me.

Having no stomach? Come on! Who would want to survive like that? Now, while many do and have, I just don't see the joy in such a life.
Others will have another opinion of that, but here you have mine.

I prefer to be here completely intact or not at all.

Hi Fitness Diva,

Would having no stomach save on food? LOL! There may not be any appetite.

Let me say that there's nothing like the original equipment. Replacement parts may be at some future horizon with stem cell development being in full swing. But who would want to live for 150 or 200 years. That would be tiring.

As for number 3, I now understand why some circus performers I saw as a kid used to swallow razor blades - the thin ones inserted in the old razor types. At that age, I imagined how painful that would be come metabolism time, especially if it came out with both sharp sided tearing at the opening. Worse if the guy was suffering from constipation! Ouch! :-) --Durano, done!

You are right...the small intestine is 20 feet long...the large intestine 6 feet. Because of Crohn's I've had 20 inches of small intestine removed and about 5 feet of large removed.

I had never heard that about the stomach lining so I'm assuming that people with ulcers have some genetic predisposition that stunts that growth.

Very interesting and as a former nurse I've not heard a lot of these facts. The human body is a constant source of new information. I'm not sure we'll ever figure it out completely because it is so complex and indeed differs on a cellular (and genetic) level from person to person.
