Back in the Saddle, Agin!.....
Phew! That was a close one! I didn't know if I was gonna have a comp today or not, but I woke up hopeful!
Before going to work this morning, I loaded up both laptops into my backpack and took them with me, planning to stop at the Geek Squad at the Best Buy close to my job after teaching my classes. One of the Geek Squad guys was able to straighten out the older laptop (at no charge!), which I'd just paid a local computer guy to clean up and install Windows XP on for me. For some reason, I couldn't get an internet connection after the first fix, but they figured it out today at Best Buy.
The only thing is that the reinstallation and upgrade wiped out all my old files, so this computer is completely bare....no programs, nothing - just the windows explorer web browser and basic OS files. Today has seen me installing anti virus and spyware programs, adobe flash, and all the usual stuff you need to get around and do all your webbie stuff. I will now download my photo and video programs so I can import my pics and vids as I need them. The great thing is, since there's nothing on it, the comp is damn fast! Nothing inside to slow it down - yet! ;)
I need my other one fixed soon, though, cuz that's the one that's all souped up with all my files, pics, favorite programs and games. I do everything on that comp, including building my websites with my Microsoft Frontpage. But I'm gonna get both of them all tricked out so that it will never again be an issue! Yay!
Repair costs so far, $149.00. $60 for the local computer guy fixing the old comp, and $89 for letting the Geek Squad put some freshly bought RAM in the new one. After I saw him do it, I realized that I could have saved $40, and just put it in myself, but hey, you live and learn! I'm a blog whiz, not a computer genius! :D
That particular one still won't let Windows run, though, so he tells me that I need to let them run a full diagnostics and possibly wipe out my hard drive so they can reinstall everything back on it to the tune of $200. (gotta back up everything that's on the drive, which is included). I just looked at the guy. I don't know if I'm going for door number 1 just yet - a good friend of mine just gave me the phone # of a computer guy that can come over here and do it for less than half of that. I'll decide by tomorrow which way I'll go.
Well, anyway, it's great to be back blogging after this craziness! Now, while downloading some more stuff, I'm gonna relax and play me a few good games of Scrabble!
See you all soon with my next post, and thanks to all of you that sent your support!

I only learned how to put my own RAM in my laptop a few months back... LOL... all the best to you!
Life really comes to a halt when u don't have access to a computer or the internet! Glad it worked out thought!
Don't you just love technology?
If it were not for my wife, I would not even be able to delete email.
Sigh.
Want to hear a fun computer repair story?
So a couple months ago I was working out in my basement, I have a bench down there and I was changing the weights. My mind was clearly somewhere else because I took all the weight off one side which is A) stupid and B) weird because I can't think of a reason of why i would take all the weight off.
To my horror the bar starts to rise and I can only stand and stare because im still holding a couple heavy plates. It goes all the way up, slams onto the floor standing straight in the air, and falls....on my laptop. And spills the cup of water by it, onto the laptop.
Luckily it still works, the case is cracked though. Because this is my schools laptop and I may end up having to pay a $500 deductible on it.
I usually make a conscious effort to take weight off evenly. Its a shame the one time i didnt it had to fall on my laptop.
I feel your pain! We picked up a bad virus a couple weeks ago and had to entirely reformat our computer. Thank goodness we had most things backed up on an external hard drive.
I'm happy that you're on the road agin. Puters...don't cha jus luv 'em. :-)
Welcome back!!! wow you really have to pay so much to a thing that you know you can do, by just watching you tube like replacing memory card.
LOL. Shaxx, me too! I just learned how to put my RAM on by myself. Haha..
I suddenly glad I am surrounded by all type of future engineer. I could easily have the Electric and Electronic engineers to fix up all my computer troubles, with a less cost of course :) BTW, I don't even understand half of their languages!
Oh my goodness, I am so glad I stumbled over this in cyberspace again. Your tips are great and just made me feel 100 percent better. My desktop and laptop went down at the same time and it's been a nightmare for the past few days! I am now happily working on a new laptop. Hope all goes well with your computers!
So glad that you are back in the saddle again and your computer is working :-)
Hey there! Boy, I can sure relate to your PC troubles. Even though I have virus and spyware protection, through dropping ECs, I got some nasty malware/spyware and I'm in the midst of getting it straightened out. No more dropping from my Inbox that's for sure! I'm just hoping I can fix it and not have to resort to having the hard drive wiped clean. AAARRRRGH!!! On a side note, Have you received your Pops yet?
Welcome back. Sorry your computer crashed. It happened to me 2 years ago. It sucks.

Hello Fitness Diva,
Welcome back! By the way, FireFox 3.0 is a great browser. I've been using it for a while and love it.

Good luck with your installations. I had the same thing happen a few months ago, so I know it's a pain in the neck (but I'm sure you've got a few good exercises for that).
