Marion Jones Sentenced to Prison Time

This saga just gets sadder and sadder.....

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) - Marion Jones was sentenced Friday to six months in prison for lying about using steroids and a check-fraud scam, despite her plea that she not be separated from her two young children "even for a short period of time."

"I ask you to be as merciful as a human being can be," said Jones, who cried on her husband's shoulder after she was sentenced.

The disgraced former Olympic champion was ordered to surrender March 11 to begin her term.

almost all winning sports athletes take some kind of illegal enhancement drug

I agree. It really seems to me that they're picking and choosing who to really go after to the fullest degree. Many other steroid abusing professionals out there are just getting a free pass and a slap on the wrist. It's not fair.
We're also seeing quite a few famous people commit actual crimes and get less punishment than this. Why?

She also was part of a check fraud scheme. Did you read that? I don't feel sorry for her at all. She's a criminal, and criminals should get what they deserve.

I completely understand your point, Tiger lily, but what I'm saying is that it seems that the criminal justice system seems to pick and choose who to throw the book at.
Yeah, the check fraud thing...that deserves punishment for sure. Basically stealing the Olympic medals and records from her other competitors....ditto.

But how many out there commit more serious crimes, yet suffer far less judicial consequence for it?

I also think that she and a few select others are just being made scapegoats to appease the public, while some that also did the same just get to skate.

If you're gonna go after one, I say you'd better just go and get 'em all! She's NOT the only one!

She has obviously paid a very high price, a lot higher than all the white guys in baseball, for instance, who've been juicing for years. You can bet Roger Clemens will never do a day in jail.

Wonder if they go after any white female athletes for juicing?

If I wasn't an atheist I'd be praying for the lady. My heart goes out to her and her family. Two of my own daughters made mistakes and went to prison. Both are out now, working hard, building decent lives and trying. Really trying.

At least, unlike so many other black women behind the walls, she has a husband to raise the babies in her absence, and a college degree. She is a gifted lady, still very young too, and I hope she and her family will be OK.

one year probation would have been a more just sentence, and that's because of the fraud scam. These steroid "witch hunts" are beginning to really upset. I don't condone drug use, but without getting into a 500 word essay on the absurdity of consentual crimes, i simpley find it so hypocritical. After sentencing the judge went home and popped a prescription Percaset to relax.
