Singer Prince Is Scheduled for Hip Surgery

OMG, say it isn't so! It seems that after thousands of concerts and all the years of incredible dance performances featuring James Brown like spins and splits, Prince's hip joints have decided to throw in the towel. The singer is scheduled for hip replacement surgery, after which he will spend a few months abstaining from performing while his hip heals.

Now, those of you that came up during Prince's heyday (the Purple Rain days and beyond)....tell me that does not make you all feel old!

According to News of the World (UK):

"Pop singer Prince - who released his first album in 1978 - is being forced to undergo the surgery at just 49-years-old after suffering excruciating pain as a result of years of blistering performances.

A source told Britain's News of the World newspaper: "For months Prince, who always puts on the most energetic shows, has been complaining of pain every time he moves.

"He is totally crushed because he knows he will never be the same again."

The surgery will involve removing the ball and socket of Prince's damaged hip and replacing it with a titanium joint.

The Purple Rain singer is allegedly booking into a private hospital and aides have reportedly cleared two months from his diary to allow him time to recover from the operation."

Gee. He's even looking kind of frail in that pic, now that I notice. Well, all I can say is, I hope that all turns out well for him. What would we do without his slick moves, mind blowing concerts and uncanny ability to make the house quake? I certainly hope he gets his old swagger back after it's all said and done. Here's wishing you a full and speedy recovery, Prince!

Hi Fitness Diva,

He's pushing 50, certainly he will not be the same like he was in 1978. But that kind of pain can be terrible. My dad had the same surgery when he was 60 or so.

I knew Prince and his music and the competition of sorts he had at the time with Michael Jackson.

But I don't feel old! Some people never grow up I know, but it's not like that for me. "We do not grow old because we have lived a number of years; we grow old if we give up on our ideals". That's a quote from a former US 5 Star General, Douglas MacArthur. I've followed that quote since I read it in High School. :-)--Durano, done!

This is really the sad part about all of this. It seems to have flown by so quickly (sigh)

Well, I guess one day we'll all be leaning on canes. I'm hoping that for me it won't be til I'm about 115. lol

We'll just have to wait it out and see how Prince recovers. And man, I didn't know that he was that old!
I thought he was closer to 40, not 50.

I heard that healing from hip replacement surgery is difficult and very painful, Durano.
When you think about the fact that they're cutting open your hip and groin, removing a bone(joint) and replacing it with a piece of steel...YIKES!!!
What part of that wouldn't hurt??
Think of how often you use your hip joints all day, every day. It's not like an arm, which you could keep immobilized if you had to.
Just to get up, walk, run, and sit back down, you need your hips!

All I can say is, take care of your bones and joints, guys. I know there's controversy about the subject of milk, but I do drink plenty of it, in addition to other calcium loaded foods like cheeses, salmon, oranges, plums and broccoli.
I also know that glucosamine supplements do promote good joint health. A couple athletes and trainers I know use it pretty successfully.

I don't do crazy splits and dance performances like Prince, but my job requires constant movement and manipulation of said joints and bones at a rate of frequency and repetition that the average human does not experience.
I can easily say I've done at least a million squats and lunges in my lifetime (combined). So, I keep my eye on those well used parts of me!
So far, so good! ;)

Hey, I'd love to be the one to help Prince out with his rehab exercises. Would be interesting.... ;)
