Quotes to Live By...

Every now and then I hear a quote or phrase fall out of someone's mouth that is definitely worth noting. I heard one such quote while watching The Ultimate Fighter, season 8 just now. As was so eloquently put by Al "Stankie" Stankiewicz, 67 year old boxing coach, and assistant coach to the fighters this season:
"Tomorrow is like a promissory note. You don't know if you're gonna get it or not. Today? Today is money in your hand. You gotta take today and make the best of it!"

That's the type of quote I write down and tape to my mirror, folks. You tell 'em, Stankie! ;)

Now, as I dug deeper, I learned that this gem of wisdom from the coach is actually a somewhat rougher take on a famous quote by Kay Lyons. The original quote goes:

"Yesterday is a canceled check; tomorrow is a promissory note; today is the only cash you have -- so spend it wisely."

I think I like Stankie's version better! ;)

What really good quote have you heard lately? Or what's your favorite?

"Tomorrow is like a promissory note. You don't know if you're gonna get it or not. Today? Today is money in your hand. You gotta take today and make the best of it!" ------ thanks a lot for sharing this one! There is humor and at the same very sound truth!

Thanks also for stopping by at my blog and leaving me inspiring comments.

I like the second version better. Definitely going to have to remember that one.

Here is mine:
"Play with your toys today. Because tomorrow they could be broken."

"Expect nothing and you won't be disappointed."

That's the one I tell folk anytime they are crying about someone not doing something that they thought they would do but never actually asked the person to do. Don't assume fool.

Being raised by "pull yourself up by your bootstrap" parental advice--I like both quotes b/c they're both saying that each person is the master of their own destiny.

Stankie's version is definitely better. LOL!

This isn't a quote, but every time I spoke to my father he would end the conversation by telling me he loved me and saying, "Don't take no wooden nickels."

I love this and I like Stankie's version better myself. I find quotes to be so motivating and uplifting. I have so many favorite quotes but one that I try to live by is by Albert Schweitzer-"Think occasionally of the suffering of which you spare yourself the sight". I try to do this each day. Great to stop by!

"This too shall pass"

That one gets me through the day sometimes. Good times or bad, everything is temporary.

Seize the day!

Except when you have an 18 month old tugging at you. Then you just do the best ya can.

Keeping in with the theme, my quote is from a scripture:

Matthew 6:34

"Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble."

obsession---a word the lazy use to describe the dedicated.

There are a few that run through my day -

The Golden rule - do onto others as you would have them do onto you.

Be very careful of what you wish for, because you just may get it, and it may not be anything like what you truly wanted.

For my child - You can't always get what you want. He hates it when I use that on him.

Great quote! I have always loved collecting and learning from the wisdom of quotes; there are just so much we can learn from them.

"Letting go of our suffering is the hardest work we will ever do. It is also the most fruitful. To heal means to meet ourselves in a new way -- in the newness of each moment where all is possible and nothing is limited to the old."
