A mere 59 minutes into the 2009 Australian Open Women's Final, Serena Williams clinched her 10th career grand slam title, defeating Dinara Safin of Russia 6-0, 6-3.
Dinara Safin just didn't have a chance. Serena came out and in the first set, quickly pummeled Safin 6 games to love, barely allowing a point, and breaking the Russian's serve the entire set. In the second, Safin managed to lift her game just a bit, but it was still no match for Serena's power, determination and undeniable talent. Safin just got overpowered and overwhelmed. Perhaps the nerves that come along with such a huge grand slam event can explain her weak, lackluster play.
The second set ended 6-3, crowning Serena the Australian Open Women's champion for the 4th time. She is now the #1 female tennis player for the 3rd time. She has also just become the most paid female athlete ever, having earned more game winnings during her career than any other female in any other sport.
Just the day before, she and sister Venus also captured the Australian Open's 2009 women's doubles title, which to Serena must have just been the cherry on the cake!
I'm hoping that Serena continues to stay healthy, formidable and fierce so that we can further witness this mega talent whipping that ball at speeds of up to 130+ mph at her opponents for many more years to come! Go, Serena!
