My Guest Post on Weight Loss and Hypnosis

Hey, everybody. Matt from Weight Loss and Hypnosis has asked me to guest post on his blog, and I’m honored! I have decided that in keeping with the theme of his blog, I’d explore more of the mind to body connection involved in losing weight. After all, it all begins in the mind!

So, can you really think yourself thin? Well, you know the saying “if you think it, you can do it”. That definitely applies to weight loss.
Check out his blog and the rest of the article I wrote here: Change Your Mind, Change Your Body

Thanks again to Matt for giving me the opportunity to post on his site!

When Your Week Starts Off Just Right

Sometimes you just have one of those perfect Mondays. You wake up feeling refreshed, energized, and ready to tackle your week like it's nothing, and from the moment you step out of the bed, everything just falls right into place like it's supposed to.

I had just that kind of morning today. Got up to train my early am client, and when I stepped outside, it was a gorgeous morning (even though it was still a bit dark!). Nice, peaceful, thoughtful walk to the track where I train her, and before I knew it, we were done. Even though it was as nice a morning as it was, there weren't many people out.

On my way home from our training session, I decided that I felt like some pancakes today. I haven't had those in such a long time, but for some reason, they popped right into my brain this morning, demanding that I not forget how good they used to be to me. So, I sat down and had myself a plate at the diner by my house with a huge glass of milk, just like I did when I was a little girl. That was my absolute favorite thing, pancakes and a big glass of milk, and I remember how I used to make sure every inch of pancake was saturated with syrup before I ate it.
I didn't hold back on the syrup this morning, either! Hell, I'm gonna go big, or just not go at all!

Do you know that after my lovely little breakfast, I felt so good that on my way home I began to skip? Yep! A few folks looked at me as if to say "what the hell???", but I didn't care. It feels good to skip. You should try it sometime! Happy little leaps that send you bouncing down the street like a happy little ball. After a few of those happy little hops, you realize why kids do it all the time. Skipping every now and then is something I highly recommend. In fact, I think I made my client skip this morning. Hers were not the happy kind, though! ;)

So, now I get home and start my web tasks, which are many! I have to say, though, I do love Monday! Simply because I don't work on Monday (with the exception of that one client). No classes to teach, no commute, no need to pull any wicked choreography out of my pocket to thrill and amaze my class members, no brainstorming on the next way to try to kill 'em in the weights class. No having to put someone in check for trying to talk on their cell phone in class (the nerve!), or for being super late. Nothing but a long, relaxed, complete and total ME day, where I get to do whatever the hell I please! Trying REAL hard to get MORE Mondays in my life! ;)

When your week starts off right, you feel like you can rule the world. Well, at least your little corner of it. I'm hoping that you all have a good Monday and wonderful start to your week as well. And if not, well...there's always Tuesday! ;) Have a great week! :D

The Hottest New Fitness Gadgets You Should Know About

What would health and fitness be without that good old standby, the fitness gadget?
Remember the gyrating belt waist trimmer? How about that Thigh Master? Come on, you know you had one! That thing sold over 2 billion units. We won't tell anybody that you were one of the lucky buyers! ;)
Well, fitness gadgets have come a long way since those little gems, and the technology used on some of the more recent ones is quite amazing. Here are a couple that need to be on your radar:

The Fitbit System

Using technology similar to the Wii gaming system, the Fitbit Tracker is a motion sensor that you can attach to your clothing and wear all day. It collects data on your movement, calories burned, and how much sleep you've gotten from day to day. You also get what is called the base station which transmits all of your tracker data to the Fitbit website, where you go to check your stats. On the website, you also get an avatar. You get to see how well you're doing not only from the reports you read, but from the visible state of your avatar. You don't get enough sleep or activity, your avatar begins to show the effects of this by looking haggard and gaining weight. If you do all the right things, your avatar becomes vibrant and healthy. If you guys can remember those early hand held Pokemon games where you had to raise and feed this little electronic thing to keep it alive, then that's pretty much the concept here.

But this is serious, because it's your body and your own stats that you're keeping track of. You will know when you need to exercise more, sleep more or less, and also how many calories you need to consume to reach your target weight. The Fitbit system has just become available on back order and will begin to ship in January 2009. For more in depth info on Fitbit check their website Fitbit Tracking System

Yamaha Bodibeat Exercise Pod

For those of you that run, or just like to get out and create your own workouts, this is an ideal accompaniment to your routines. The Yamaha Bodibeat is like an Ipod for exercising. It has a library of songs, downloaded by you, that you can set to either match your running or workout pace by beats per minute, or to change songs when you go into different phases of your workouts. Those of you that take fitness classes will get that concept right away. For aerobic based routines and activities, you'll have upbeat tunes that match your pace, speeding up when you speed up, and slowing down when you do, always matching your pace. For slower paced, weight room based workouts, you can put a more intense, slower paced selection of songs to work out to. Be sure to download all of your favorites on here, and you'll be motivated to stay working out that much longer. Lightweight and waterproof, you can wear this for any type of exercise.

Tanita BC558 Segmental Body Composition Monitor

The Tanita Segmental Body Comp Monitor is one high tech scale. Not only does it measure your body fat, but it details your body composition, FROM LIMB TO LIMB! It assesses body fat, body water percentages, bone mass, metabolism rate, muscle mass, daily calorie intake and a few other things, as well.
It gives readings from 5 different segments of your body, not just the whole. That way you can really pinpoint your trouble areas. It also keeps charts and graphs of all your stats for up to 36 months. You can then download your stats and print them out on your computer.
If someone other than you gets on the scale, it reverts to guest mode, so your stats don't become skewed. Now, that's one smart scale! You can read more about the Tanita BC558 here.

And just for fun....

The Hawaii Chair

Okay, this came out last year, but it's still very much a hot item! Lose weight and get in shape from just sitting on your butt! Now who doesn't want some of that?
The Hula, or Hawaii chair claims to tone up your abs and mid region by sitting in it, and basically just trying to hold on. Supposedly, you can work, eat, drink and surf the net while getting a major calorie burn right from your Hawaii chair.
I'm not exactly putting this on my list for exercise, but I'd definitely get one as a gag to show off to my house guests and friends. I think that your laugh muscles will get exercised on this thing more than anything else. Here, we have a live demo of the Hula chair!

Okay, you know you want one! LOL. Anyway, that's it for this edition of the hottest new fitness gadgets. Check back again soon for updates! ;)

Whose Fault is it When A Child Becomes Obese?

According to recent studies, childhood obesity is on the rise. We know all the facts, the health risks, the statistics, what needs to be done about it, and yet the problem continues to grow.

You and I see it everyday. Children and teens that are 50, 100 sometimes even 150 lbs overweight, accompanied by parents who seem to just look the other way as the child gorges themself on junk food and sugar. You can go into any fast food restaurant and see an entire family of morbidly obese people, unabashedly consuming super size meals and jumbo drinks. What the hell?? Is anybody listening? The parents lead, and of course, the children follow.

The latest trend has been to sue the companies that produce and sell these products we over consume.

Just as recently as a couple years ago, Kellogg and Nickelodeon were being sued over their junk food ad marketing tactics targeting children 8 years and under.
In addition, a child advocate activist group threatened to sue Viacom for using the Sponge Bob image to promote sugary snacks and cereals. In another lawsuit, a mother is suing Nabisco over the trans fat in Oreo cookies, citing that this is one of the causes for her child being obese. Are these lawsuits justified? Is it the fault of these companies for producing and marketing these items, or does the fault lie closer to home?

Even though a new law has passed requiring all restaurants to list the calorie content of all food items on their menus, fast food restaurants are still doing a brisk and steady business. They have complied with the prescribed laws on this matter. Now, if we still decide to go in these places to eat and choose high calorie selections daily, is it really their fault?

If we continue as we have, by 2015, 75 percent of adults and nearly 24 percent of U.S. children and adolescents will be overweight or obese.

Obesity is now the most prevalent health issue for kids and teens.

So, who's really at fault?

I'm going to take the other side, for a change. I'm usually the one beating up on the parents, but I want to be fair. In defense of the parent's "It's not my fault" claim,
we have these facts:

Most kid's meals at restaurants exceed recommended daily calorie limit

Few healthy items are found in kid's meals at many restaurants

Food is the most advertised kid product during children's programs

Soda and candy machines can be readily found in most junior high and high schools

Fast food chains heavily target children, and use toy giveaways and games to attract them to their products

You can't watch your kid 24-7

So, what do you think? Is allowing a child to become morbidly obese a form of child abuse? Should child protective services or some other agency become involved when a child's weight goes to such an extreme level that it becomes life threatening?
I know how I feel about it. Pass me the hand cuffs! What's your opinion?

The Banana Diet! .....Say What???

banana diet
Thought I'd heard of them all, but apparently Japan is in the midst of a banana shortage because of a crazy new diet called the Banana Diet. Bananas started flying off the shelves when Japanese Opera singer Kumiko Mori claimed to have lost 7 kilos on it. Once the weight loss claim of this famous Japanese star hit the airwaves, it started a banana buying frenzy.

Fad dieting seems to be big in Japan, and this is the most recent one to come down the pike. As a result, banana sales in Japan are up between 70 and 80% compared to last year.

Now, what I want to know is how the heck eating a banana is supposed to make you lose weight? I've been eating them all my life, and I haven't seen them do anything except kill my hunger for a couple hours. Hmmmmm..... maybe that's part of it.

According to the plan, you're supposed to start the day out with a banana and a glass of warm water, eat what you want for lunch and dinner, eliminate desserts, alcohol and sweets, and eat dinner by 8pm. It also recommends that you be in bed by midnight. According to those who follow the diet, exercise is optional.

Well, it sounds good at first, and then it doesn't. First of all, I know that fad dieting is one of the worst things you can do to lose weight. No matter what the diet, if it's not well balanced and giving you all the nutrients you need, you're going to end up making yourself ill, or you'll end up binge eating. Totally defeats the purpose. Secondly, any program that's telling you that you don't have to exercise is leading you down the wrong path. Being healthy includes exercising in some fashion or form. Sorry, but there's just no way around that. Once people get that one point alone, half of their weight loss issues will start to disappear.

Anyway, back to this crazy banana diet. Taking a closer look, this would be easy for me to test out. I eat bananas just about every morning already. The other things that go along with the rules of this diet just make sense, when you think about it. Cut out desserts, sugar and alcohol, eat your last meal by 8pm, and go to bed at a reasonable hour. There's no magic here. Just some basic rules that anyone who's trying to lose weight should follow anyway.
Now, the "eat anything you want" along with the bananas..... I'm not buying that.
You cannot just stuff your face with fatty food, go eat a banana, and then "poof", those extra calories disappear. Uh uh! No way! Not gonna happen!

Anyway, I'm curious. I'm gonna play with this banana diet for a few days and see if some pounds do just roll right off. If done following the basic rules, I'm thinking that at best, I should maintain the weight that I am right now. But if some major miracle happens, you bet I'll be back here to tell it!! ')

You can read the Time magazine article about the banana diet craze here: Banana Diet

OK, I've been tagged!

I usually don't do tags and such, but the two bloggers that tagged me, Dori and Heidi, are two people whose blogs I enjoy, so I just can't let them down! lol
Ok....I'm supposed to list 7 random things about myself that you might not know.
Here goes:

1. I moved out of my Mom's house and got my first apartment on my 18th birthday. Couldn't stand being told what to do, so, already with a steady job, and having saved up, I had a place ready and my bags packed by the door on that very morning. I had repeatedly told my Mom for as long as I could remember "As soon as I turn 18, I'm outta here!", and damned if I didn't do it! I'm big on making statements! ;)

2. I'm the only girl in my family, and I'm also the oldest. I have four younger brothers. Might explain why I can be just a bit bossy! I guess I picked the right profession, eh? ;)

3. I can eat the same exact thing for 8 or 9 days in a row before I get sick of it. In the past, I have eaten spaghetti for 10 days straight, fried pork chops every day for more than a week, franks and beans every day & macaroni and cheese for more than a week straight. For each meal. Many times! Those were not the healthiest of years for me, to say the least! ;)

4. My grandma didn't get married until she was 27. Back in the 1940's, that was unheard of! She also worked, and had her own place until she married, and my grandpa had to work really hard to get her! A woman way ahead of her time!
Hmmmm.... wonder where I get it from? ;)

5. The only things I'm afraid of are death by fire and boogers. No fear of heights, animals, water, snakes, blood and guts....nope. But if you pick your nose around me, I have to get up and leave. And I won't ever let you touch me again, either. lol! I once broke up with a guy for picking his nose.
I'm also deathly afraid of getting a booger flicked on me. If I see someone picking their nose and smearing the boogers on the furniture and things around them, I lose it. I must flee the area immediately, or I'll get nauseous.
Now, my own snot is just fine with me. I just can't stand other people's!

6. I sleep with the air on, even in the winter. Just love the feeling of being snuggled up under thick covers in a cold room. Boyfriends of the past have had a BIG problem with this!

7. I completely melt at the sight of a cat or kitten. Wanna butter me up and get me to agree with anything you say or want to do? Just stick a kitty in my arms. I love them to death, and have always had cats in my life since I was a little girl. They're the best!

So, there you have it! 7 random facts about me! Hope you all don't think I'm crazy! ;)

Kudos and Thanks to All Those Who Taught Me Well

I've said many a time that if it were not for martial arts, I would not be the awesome fitness teacher and trainer that I am today. The arts gave me such a strong foundation that really put me head and shoulders above the rest of my peers when I stepped up and became certified to teach exercise in 1997.

Even today, I call on some of the lessons and ethics I learned from my teachers of the past in my own classes. I'm a firm, thorough, innovative and demanding teacher. As I teach, I realize that part of who I am as a teacher and instructor came from all the wonderful senseis, fighting coaches and teachers (and a dance instructor from Broadway Dance center named Frank Hatchett) I have had over the years.
They were stern, demanding, they pushed me to beyond my limits, made me believe in my potential, and shaped and trained me to be the best. And I know, without being cocky, that I AM the best. Just ask anyone that has taken a class of mine or been trained by me. My mind constantly thinks, searches, evolves, and spits out what is necessary to give my people the best workouts and fitness experiences of their lives.

I just wanted to take time out today to give thanks to all those who taught me and gave me the incredible foundation that I have in martial arts and fitness. As I look back on the past, I can remember hard as hell training days, and times when I wanted to improve and excel so bad that it made me cry. I remember when I first realized that I was good at fighting. I remember the first time that I won a competition. The first time I lost. It was awful. Hell, ANYTIME I lost a fight, it was awful! lol Losing is always devastating just knowing all the hard work you've put in.
I remember not understanding why my teachers were so hard on me in certain moments. At times I felt they went too far. They are, after all, only human. But out of this fierce New York City piece of coal, they wrought a shining diamond, all of them, and I just want to give thanks to every one of them today.
These are the people who taught me to be the teacher, trainer, instructor, fighter, martial artist and phenom that I am today:

Jerry Fontanez
Tae Kwon Do

Mike Mullero
Tae Kwon Do/ Kickboxing

Steven Katz
Tae Kwon Do / Kickboxing / Jiujitsu

Frank Hatchett
Jazz Dance
(Frank is a legend!)

Lee Shabaka
Kickboxing / Boxing

All awesome teachers, trainers and Masters of the art of combat and movement.

I KNOW I'm doing all of you very proud! ;)

No More Belly, Baby!

flat abs
What everyone wants....a smooth flat stomach that looks sexy and toned. It's attainable for just about anyone, but you do have to put in the work.

Contrary to what many believe, crunches and ab exercises alone are not going to get you those flat abs. It's a combination of diet and exercise that gets you there. So, let's start with the diet. You know that consuming excessive fat and sugar is a no no already, right? Then, what you need to do here is to have other good, enjoyable, filling foods on hand to keep you from grabbing and snacking on the bad stuff. Here are a few things you can consume instead:

Fruits

Sugarless items and desserts made with a sugar substitute

Leaner meats

Foods and vegetables with a high fiber content that help combat hunger

Soy products

Nuts

Also, don't forget that smaller portions can go a long way in helping you shave the amount of sugar and fat you consume on a daily basis.

We all know that diet alone is not enough to get that trim, toned look. If you're tired of just doing crunches, try some of these ab toning methods for a change:

Pilates exercises

Crunches on a stability ball

Balancing exercises on a BOSU

Hanging leg lifts/raises

Plank exercises

Twists with a light weight medicine ball

Twists with a light weight body bar

Dancer's crunch (in standing position, contract abs all the way in, and then release, repeating 10 to 15 times per set

Now, to finish it all off, you need to get in that cardio. That's the best way to just melt that fat right off. In a cardio rut? Here are a few ways to go about it that you may not have tried:

Power walking

Running

Jump Rope

Step Aerobics

Zumba Classes

Kickbox Aerobics

Racquet Ball

Swimming

To insure yourself the utmost success, you need to make sure to pay attention to all aspects of a good health and fitness program. Streamline your diet, do your strength training and toning exercises, and get your cardio in at least 3 to 4 times a week. Using this simple formula, you will be sure to achieve that flat, sexy stomach that looks good both in clothes and out of them. It's not impossible! Just set your mind to it, and do it! I know you can! So, what are you waiting for? Get busy!

Cool Body Facts #2

So, how about that hair and those nails? Who has more hair, blondes or brunettes? Chimps or humans? What finger grows the longest nail? You just might be surprised...

Here are some cool body facts about hair and nails.

Bet you didn't know...

1. Every day the average person loses 60-100 strands of hair. Your hair loss will vary in accordance with the season, pregnancy, illness, diet and age.

2. Women’s hair is about half the diameter of men’s hair. Hair diameter also varies on average between races.

3. The fastest growing nail is on the middle finger. And the nail on the middle finger of your dominant hand will grow the fastest of all. Nail growth is related to the length of the finger, with the longest fingers growing nails the fastest and shortest the slowest.

4. There are as many hairs per square inch on your body as a chimpanzee.

5. On average, blondes have more hair. Hair color determines how dense the hair on your head is. The average human has 100,000 hair follicles, each of which is capable of producing 20 individual hairs during a person’s lifetime. Blondes average 146,000 follicles while people with black hair tend to have about 110,000 follicles. Those with brown hair fit the average with 100,000 follicles and redheads have the least dense hair, with about 86,000 follicles.

6. Fingernails grow nearly 4 times faster than toenails.

Okay, blondes get to have more fun AND more hair?? Come on!! ;)

Russian Prime Minister Putin Kicks Butt - With His Judo Video

Ok. How many countries out there can say that one of their leaders has just put out a how to martial arts video? Well, Russia can!

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin just released his first instructional video on the fine art of Judo. This creation of this vid is just one of the ways he has decided to celebrate his 56th birthday. Way to do it, Vlad! Now, that's just bad ass, isn't it?

"Let's Learn Judo with Vladimir Putin" is a collaborative effort between Putin, who is a one time judo champ in his home city, St. Petersburg (formerly Leningrad), Olympic judo champion Yasuhiro Yamashita, and a few of his judo practicing associates.

Vladimir Putin

Showing off his masculine prowess is nothing new for Putin. He is becoming known in the media for his sometimes over the top "he man" antics, which include being photographed shirtless on a fishing excursion, and tracking a tiger through the Siberian forest.
Proud of his commitment to physical fitness, Putin has cast himself as the ambassador of physical fitness for his country. Will his new judo video impress the Russian public and the rest of the world at large? Guess we'll just have to wait and see. Gotta love the cojones on this politician, though. Only in Russia, eh?

I Am Going Back In...Time to Trade!!

I know you might think that's crazy, but I see an opportunity. The stock market crash is devastating to many, but to those in position, it can be a good thing. Now, I'm not happy for those whose 401k's have melted away to almost nothing. Hell, mine is not looking that good either, right now. But what goes down must eventually go right back up. The market never stays down forever.

I used to be a stock market FIEND back in 2001, 2 and 3. When I wasn't teaching classes and training clients, I was all about the market. This started for me right after 9/11. I had been studying up on some stocks and keeping a virtual portfolio, and then that fateful day came and the markets fell. Remember? I jumped in right then.

The very first stock that I bought was Blockbuster Video (BBI). I'd been watching it for a few weeks. For weeks after those planes hit the towers, we didn't have TV, other than channel 2 (unless you had cable, which I didn't), so I was going to Blockbuster buying videos to watch. I figured, might be a good idea to buy some of this stock. So I did. Bought it at 18 and change, held it for about 3 weeks, and sold at 26 and change. My first stock market trade was a success! I was completely hooked from then on. I then bought some Honeywell (HON), and a few others I can't remember, started studying all the info out here on trading, began studying companies that I was planning to trade, reading their company reports and even keeping little files on them. It was crazy. I would not even teach a class or train a client between 9 and 11 am, because I lived for that 9:30 opening bell.

I'd have my little Scottrader live board up, and my two Ameritrade accounts open, ready to watch and participate in the action.

I had a good year of trading, followed by a bad year (when I discovered those damn penny stocks!!), and then the next year I broke about even. Then I got over it. But trading for me was fun. I absolutely lived for it, and was all over the finance message boards on AOL learning trading secrets from some of the veterans, folks that have been in the market for decades. Damn.... I'm getting nostalgic thinking back on all that!! LOL! I made some really good online friends when I was trading, some whom I still keep in contact with. I had even started my own Yahoo group called "Stock Market Divas". Don't go over there now.... nothing but crickets chirping and tumbleweeds, because I completely abandoned it when I stopped trading.

Some of you might think I'm crazy, but I know exactly what I'm heading into. I used to eat, sleep and breathe the market. And I know well the golden rule of trading: don't gamble what you can't afford to lose. Because, at the end of the day, that's what trading in the stock market is; gambling. But I'm no rookie here.... been there, done that, LIVED that. Know how to apply my due diligence and read a quarterly report, etc. And right now, I see some BARGAINS!!! I've got a few extra bucks of play money sitting around to throw into the game, and I'm gonna go for it. This market crash is not going to last, mark my words. And you know what? I'm excited! Just about as excited as I used to get when I was in the thick of it all years ago. Hell, I still have a few of my old trading accounts still open, just sitting there holding the scraps of some penny trash I bought before I quit back in 2004. It's time. Time to throw my hat back into the ring. Here I go..... Wish me luck!

Did You Know.....?

...that eating an apple can help you in your weight loss efforts? An agent in apples called pectin limits how much fat your cells can absorb! Consumption of pectin has also been shown to reduce blood cholesterol levels. Now, how's that for a helping hand? And of course you know that apples are high in fiber, which is a must have dietary staple for anyone trying seriously trying to shed some pounds. For optimum results, try to eat at least 5 apples a week. So, what are you waiting for?

And the Winner Is....

Fitness Diva's Fitness Quiz Contest
The Answers & The Winner

Thank you all for participating in The Fitness Diva's Fitness Quiz Competition!

There were close to 30 contestants, and quite a few of you almost got all the questions correct. They were, however, a bit tricky, and purposely so. Want to see how well you did? Without further ado, here are the answers:

*****Fitness Quiz Questions and Answers*****

1. You can eat whatever you want if you exercise enough.

FALSE

If you consume more calories than you burn in a day, you'll gain weight — no matter how much you exercise.

2. Abdominal exercises will flatten your stomach.

FALSE

Losing the layers of fat covering your abdominal muscles will reveal the flat muscles of your stomach. Abdominal exercises strengthen the stomach muscles, but only burning off the fat by exercising and/or restricting your caloric intake enough to create a calorie deficit will get rid of the fat on your body enough to show those flat abs.

3. Exercise has to be strenuous to be effective.

FALSE

Physical activity need not be strenuous to provide health benefits, it just has to be consistent and a regular part of your lifestyle and habits.

4. Aerobic exercise permanently speeds up your metabolism.

FALSE

Your metabolism — the rate at which you burn calories — speeds up while you're exercising, and perhaps for a short time afterward. But it doesn't stay that way all day. If you want to rev up your metabolism overall, add strength training to your aerobic workouts. You'll build calorie-burning muscle while you're working off excess fat.

5. The more you sweat, the more fat you'll lose.

FALSE

The amount of sweat you excrete has absolutely nothing to do with burning fat. It is merely the loss of water, which will be replenished when you consume more liquids.

BONUS QUESTIONS**

6. How much cardiovascular exercise should a healthy woman do to achieve such health benefits as improved heart health and weight control?

According to the American Heart Association, three to four days a week for a minimum of 30 minutes is the amount needed to achieve improved heart health and weight control.

7. How long should you work out to burn fat? (not counting your warm up and cool down period)

12 minutes is the amount of time needed for the body to start producing FAT burning enzymes.

Quotes to Live By...

Every now and then I hear a quote or phrase fall out of someone's mouth that is definitely worth noting. I heard one such quote while watching The Ultimate Fighter, season 8 just now. As was so eloquently put by Al "Stankie" Stankiewicz, 67 year old boxing coach, and assistant coach to the fighters this season:
"Tomorrow is like a promissory note. You don't know if you're gonna get it or not. Today? Today is money in your hand. You gotta take today and make the best of it!"

That's the type of quote I write down and tape to my mirror, folks. You tell 'em, Stankie! ;)

Now, as I dug deeper, I learned that this gem of wisdom from the coach is actually a somewhat rougher take on a famous quote by Kay Lyons. The original quote goes:

"Yesterday is a canceled check; tomorrow is a promissory note; today is the only cash you have -- so spend it wisely."

I think I like Stankie's version better! ;)

What really good quote have you heard lately? Or what's your favorite?
